Crown Lengthening

When decay occurs below the gumline, or if a tooth is severely fractured, your dentist may recommend a crown lengthening procedure. This procedure allows more of the tooth to be used for the development of a crown. Without this additional tooth structure, the crown would not have the retention necessary to allow for a good long term result. Additionally, a crown or restorative material placed on or close to the bone leads to chronic inflammation and can compromise the health of your mouth. During this procedure a small amount of gum tissue and bone are removed to allow exposure of more of the tooth.
